I had a funny experience this morning. It all started last night… You see, we bought a food steamer, and I threw a few eggs in with last nights dinner. I figured I kill two birds with one stone- no pun intended. This morning I decided to have myself a hard boiled egg, only to discover that they were slightly less done than I would like. I decided that since the eggs only needed a little cooking, I would microwave one for a minute.

I put the egg in the microwave and started looking out at my backyard- it had been raining, and things were greener than usual. I was thinking about the recent transformer explosion in my neighborhood when I heard a ‘BOOM’ from the microwave. The egg exploded.

I cleaned it up, and figured that maybe the pressure in the egg caused it to explode. So this time, I tapped the top and bottom of the egg and removed the top of the shell to allow the air to vent. I also covered the bowl with a small dish. A few seconds later- BOOM- it exploded.

I cleaned up this mess.. it was a lot less messy due to the egg being covered by the dish. I was determined to have myself a hard boiled egg.. I was hungry, and there wasn’t much else in the house to eat.

This time, I cut an egg in half, leaving the shell on. Yeah- I cut through the shell. It was hard at first, but once you get through the top, it is easy.

I microwaved the egg without a cover. I watched it as it cooked… I noticed that the smaller half was expanding, so I took it out, and I felt the large half.. it didn’t seem to be quite hot enough, so I put it back in and kept watching… when it started to expand, I opened the microwave and pulled the egg out. As soon as I pulled the egg out of the microwave, it exploded in my face!

The moral of this story is- don’t microwave hard boiled eggs. Period. It makes a huge mess in your microwave, and no amount of cutting or venting will stop it from exploding.
